This bean pot from the La Mixteca region of Puebla, Mexico, is completely handmade by a small family of potters. Fashioned from the local clay,  which is naturally rich in talc, this unglazed South of the Border beauty has an incredibly smooth, soft, natural finish. The glossy surface comes from rubbing the pot with ancient stones that have been in the artisan's family for generations.

The ideal shape for beans with a narrow opening, round belly, and a lid that doubles as a bean bowl. This pot holds a good amount of liquid which allows the beans to move freely and cook evenly. Will fit perfectly, a pound of beans or a little more depending on the variety you cook.

Use & Care

• Stovetop, oven and microwave safe. For gas cooktops, may use diffuser or lowest heat setting. For electric cooktops, please use only with a diffuser.
• Smooth, burnished finish provides ease of cleaning. For difficult areas to clean, first soak for a few minutes in water, then scrub with a soft abrasive pad. Do not use metallic scouring pads.
• Dishwasher safe, but we recommend hand washing to give the best care to your earthenware. See our section Clay Cooking 101 for detailed explanations and effects of soaps and detergents on earthenware.
• Earthenware does not like extreme temperature changes. For example, do not take a pot cold from the refrigerator and place it directly on a stovetop or in a hot oven; it may crack.
• Before first use, please season. A complete explanation of this procedure is explained in detail in Clay Cooking 101.

Do you need a heat diffuser? A heat diffuser is required for electric cooktops and recommended for gas cooktops to reduce the risk of thermal shock and cracking the pot. We carry a variety if you need one.
