5 qt. Cazuela con Tapa
5 qt. Cazuela con Tapa

This traditional clay cazuela, Spanish for casserole, comes from the Mexican state of Michoacán and is made by a large extended family with a long history of making cookware and pottery. All their pieces are completely handmade, lead free and food safe for cooking.

This cazuela can be used on the stove, in the oven, on the grill, or over an open fire. The lidded cazuela is the ideal pot for a big batch of Mexican rice, posole, or a traditional Mexican mole. You’ll find this pot really doesn’t need to be reserved solely for Mexican food. It's an ideal braising or stew pot and the perfect cooking vessel for traditional American Boston baked beans. This size serves 6 to 8.

Features & Benefits

  • All our pieces are completely handmade, natural earthenware. Minor imperfections add authenticity and charm, and are part of the piece.
  • Easy to clean, hand-applied glaze.
  • Lead free.

Use & Care

  • Stovetop, oven and microwave safe. For gas cooktops, may use diffuser or lowest heat setting.
  • Clear ceramic glaze provides ease of cleaning. For difficult areas to clean, first soak for a few minutes in water, then scrub with a soft abrasive pad. Do not use metallic scouring pads.
  • Dishwasher safe, but we recommend hand washing to give the best care to your earthenware. See our section Clay Cooking 101 for detailed explanations and effects of soaps and detergents on earthenware.
  • Earthenware does not like extreme temperature changes. For example, do not take a pot cold from the refrigerator and place it directly on a stovetop or in a hot oven; it may crack.
  • Before first use, please season. A complete explanation of this procedure is explained in detail in Clay Cooking 101.

Shop Heat Diffusers   Do you need a heat diffuser?
A heat diffuser is required for electric cooktops and recommended for gas cooktops to reduce the risk of thermal shock and cracking the pot. We carry a variety if you need one.
